Darien Quad, Rutgers University
      New Brunswick, New Jersey

Darien Quad, a dormitory quadrangle formed by several historic buildings within Rutgers University's College Avenue Campus, was characterized by poorly defined spaces with an excess of asphalt pavement, inadequate lighting, and ineffective plantings. MKW developed a plan for the restoration of the Quad that restored its significance for visitors to the campus and students alike. A terraced lawn was created to welcome people into the space, and provide a gathering area while accommodating changes in grade. Sitting areas include benches, café tables, seat walls, a pavilion, shade trees, shrubs and groundcover plantings.
