The upper level esplanade and the lower level deck extend the length of the office/retail complex, providing alternative strolling experiences and seating opportunities. Connection between the two levels is provided at radial overlooks adjacent to the north and south piers. A common design vocabulary was established to visually unite the projects.
While predominantly an urban hardscape, the 1.4-acre perimeter esplanade incorporates landscape in raised planters at the western and eastern ends of the pier and ornamental trees in precast concrete planter boxes throughout. The east end park is punctuated by a 12-foot high stainless steel sundial set within a colored concrete compass rose and encircled by a raised planter and seating steps.
The 3.4 acre North Pier provides 1.3 acres of public open space in addition to the private residential spaces associated with the building. Serpentine planters, with ribbons of ornamental grasses and perennials, extend the length of the building culminating in a circle of lawn, plaza, and seating steps at the east end park.
At Plaza 5, a 34-story office building, MKW designed the outdoor plaza, which serves as the pedestrian link between the Arts District to the west and the Waterfront Promenade. The sinuous design motif mitigates the linearity of the space and creates a series of garden 'pockets' for casual seating and dining.
