Ferry Street Streetscape
      Newark, New Jersey

The Ironbound Section of Newark, traditionally one of the city’s most vibrant and busy communities, is characterized by its Portuguese and South American culture. Ferry Street, the Ironbound’s “Main Street”, is the locus of much of that vitality. MKW was engaged to develop a new streetscape design for the 26-block long Business Improvement District, and to reconstruct Peter Francisco Park at the west terminus. The goal of the project was to develop a comprehensive streetscape design that will express and enhance the Ironbound’s image and identity; that will provide new traffic calming elements; that will create a new pedestrian experience through the use of special pavements, furnishings, street lighting, new shade trees, and seasonal planters; and that will create new gateways to the Ironbound at Penn Station and at Five Corners. The reconstruction of Peter Francisco Park as a major open space or square will add a wonderful quality to the entrance to the Ironbound. The park will have open sitting areas, a large paved gathering space with amphitheatre steps, an interactive fountain, and restored monuments.
