Trenton State Park Competition
Trenton, New Jersey
MKW was one of five firms selected to participate in a national design competition to create a new State Capitol Park System. The goal was to enhance Trenton’s image, celebrate its history, create a destination, reclaim the waterfront and provide open space opportunities for visitors and residents alike. The design concept used ‘Bridge’ as a metaphor to reconnect Trenton to its rich past by establishing new links to the waterfront, to its history, and to land uses. The new waterfront park allows users to experience ecological systems at work and reveals and interprets hydrological and vegetative processes. Proposed historical excavation sites demonstrate the importance of industry and the Revolutionary War in the formation of Trenton and the nation. New greenways, pathways, pedestrian bridges and crossings facilitate circulation between and among the competing uses of government, culture, education, commerce, housing and recreation. The new cohesive Capital Park celebrates Trenton as a hub of two revolutions and promotes its stature as the State Capitol.
