Mr. Welsh has spent the last 25 years of his practice focused on leading landscape architecture projects for public agencies and private clients in New Jersey and New York. He also managed the landscape design program for major urban development projects in China and the Middle East. Local projects ranged from master planning to design and construction phase services. Projects varied in scale from less than ¼ acre urban plazas to 200-acre waterfront parks.
Metropolitan area clients include City of New York Parks, NJ Transit, NJ Department of Environmental Protection, NJ State Parks, NJ Transit, NJ Economic Development Authority, Newark Public Schools, Elizabeth Public Schools, NJ School Development Authority, NYC Department of Design and Construction, NYC Economic Development Corporation, NYC School Construction Authority, and NYC Department of Transportation and New York State agencies such as Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, SUNY, CUNY and Department of Transportation.
Jim’s work in New Jersey over the years includes the site design for the stations of the Initial Operating Segment of the Hudson Bergen Light Rail and numerous improvement projects for Bergen, Passaic, Middlesex and Mercer Counties.

He has supervised the timely planning, design, contract documentation, and construction administration for award winning projects such as the Intercontinental Hotel Courtyard at Times Square, Montefiore Plaza, Manhattan, Cleveland’s Perk Park and Lincoln School in Newark.
Private projects have included hotels, banks, clubs, sports and entertainment districts, corporate campuses and individual building sites in urban and suburban settings.
Mr. Welsh has worked extensively with educational clients at the primary, secondary and higher education levels. Services include planning and studies to assess current and future conditions as well and the design for new campus improvements. Clients include municipal school districts such as South River, Mahwah, Elizabeth, Newark and the City of New York. College and University clients include Montclair State College, University at Albany, Georgia Tech, York College, Binghamton University, Medgar Evers College, SUNY Maritime and NJIT.
As principal landscape architect/project manager, he coordinates with architects, engineers and cost estimators as well as in-house landscape architects to assist in the community engagement process, develop unique and context sensitive site design solutions, thorough construction documents and timely and responsive construction phase services.
He has been helping NYC address their stormwater runoff issues through the design of multiple green infrastructure projects with NYC Parks, NYC DEP and NYC EDC in Brooklyn and Queens. These projects create green infrastructure through the design of green streets, rain gardens, greenstrips, infiltration basins and bioswales.
