The reconstruction of Ocean Breeze Park provides an opportunity to create not only new athletic facilities, new ballfields, a playground and parking, but also to create what will be a major destination for Staten Islanders and for City residents, as part of the PlaNYC 2030 Initiative. The natural qualities and habitat of the site are unique and, when restored, will enhance Ocean Breeze Park’s image and identity as a regional destination. The project successfully integrates active and passive recreation, including a new indoor athletic building by Sage&Coombe Architects, ballfields, cross country trails, nature trails, a playground and water play area into a restored and viable natural environment representing and preserving the coastal grasslands of Staten Island. The geographic form and natural zoning of the site lend themselves to a successful integration of built and natural.
